Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve, usually due to increased pressure caused by excess fluid building up in the front part of the eye. Glaucomacan result in gradual vision loss and eventual blindness if not treated.
The two major types of glaucoma are Open angle glaucoma and Narrow (or Closed) angle glaucoma. The "angle" refers to the angle of the drainage channel inside the eye that controls the outflow of the watery fluid which is produced inside the eye.
Another type of this disease, called Primary Congenital Glaucoma, is diagnosed in children between birth and 3 years of age. Doctors usually detect it when the infant is between 3-6 months old, but sometimes the symptoms don’t show up until a little later.
Congenital Glaucoma is present at birth, and it affects approximately one out of every 10,000 babies. Cases that are not treated are a major cause of childhood blindness. When treated early, 80% to 90% of children respond well to the treatment.
The Laser Eye Surgerytreatment center provides all-inclusive glaucoma attention and second opinion services for several types of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is frequently known as the "silent thief of sight" because most varieties generally cause no pain and create no symptoms until noticeable vision loss happens. Because of this, glaucoma frequently advances undetected until the optic nerve has already been irreversibly damaged, with varying levels of long term vision reduction.
Advances in the ability to image small structures within the eye and their relationships to one another are rapidly altering our understanding of the disease. This research has been at the core of ourocular imaging center, where new diagnostic tools are advancing our understanding of the causes of glaucoma.
