The Abuse And Overuse Of The Word – And – In Public Speaking

You have spent many hours, if not days, preparing to give a big presentation at a conference or event. You have researched your topic, you are confident that your material will be riveting to your audience. And you have put the hard yards in, having practiced with great diligence. Are you feeling ready? Are you good to go? Have you forgotten anything? Maybe.

Your voice – Be animated — avoid speaking in a monotone. Show excitement for your material with your voice. I always practice my talks out loud — that way I hear my voice and the words I am using. This helps me modify my delivery in ways that will improve my impact with my audience.

13. Ensure you fully understand the report brief and what exactly you have to do? Ask the person commissioning the report WHY he wants it. If you can get a sound answer to this question you’ll free-up tons of time. Knowing “why” enables you to use your initiative – to find quicker ways – to get the information required.

By focusing on whiteboard interaction plus slide impact, you will radically boost results. No matter what your topic, this is a mark of highly presentation training.

The second most important aspect is your vocal presentation – how you use your voice. It includes volume, pace, tone, inflection, and enunciation. Speak loudly and clearly (even with a microphone), not too fast or slow.

Strangely, many people believe that presenting is not a ‘learnable’ skill. This may stem from the belief that some people are talented communicators-while others are hopelessly fearful. This is just false belief.

Well it is usually partly because no one dares to speak up and tell them that they need a work on their voice projection or that their presentation rambles and they need to make their content more concise. It makes sense that most people would go out of your way to avoid offending their boss or people higher up in the company or hurting his or her feelings or for fearing the loss of your job but is it not better to give these leaders straightforward and immediate advice that makes them look good or better? After all it is for the good of the company and the companies success and therefore your success in the end too.
